Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like nutrient that helps produce energy in all cells of the body. It does so by supporting the mitochondria, the tiny power plants in each of the body’s cells. Coenzyme Q10 is in fact one of the most important and modifiable factors in the production of ATP (cellular energy) in the mitochondria.
Coenzyme Q10 is also noted for its powerful antioxidant activity, and even “recharges” other antioxidants by keeping them in their reduced, active states. Ubiquinol and ubiquinone are redox pairs, meaning that they interchange between one form and the other depending on the body’s needs. Studies have shown that when either ubiquinone or ubiquinol is taken, levels of both forms increase in the body. Most people absorb ubiquinone equally as well as ubiquinol through the gut. While others may struggle with this interconversion and should speak to a qualified health care practitioner for this support.
