Other Info: Goldenseal is a perennial herb in the buttercup family native to southeastern Canada and the eastern US. The part used is the thick yellow knotted root of a 4–5-year-old plant. Unfortunately, Goldenseal has been unsustainably wild harvested throughout the 1900’s and is currently on the endangered species list and protected by CITES. It is especially important to buy Goldenseal from reputable sources that are harvesting and cultivating the plant sustainably. Up to 60,000 plants a year are harvested and sold without being replaced. 

Goldenseal is a bitter tonic and has been used for digestive issues, eyewash as a diuretic. The key constituents are found in the roots and are readily soluble in alcohol. Isoquinoline alkaloids are the key active ingredients of which berberine, and hydrastine are the most sought after.
